The Sultanate of Oman is one of Arabia’s best kept secrets, an idyllic land where majestic mountains dramatically descend towards deserts and large oases surround medieval fortified towns and castles. The colourful and immaculately dressed people are immensely courteous in welcoming visitors to their seafaring nation, the legendary home of Sinbad.

Day 1  London/ Muscat – Overnight flight to Muscat, arriving the following morning.

Day 2  Muscat/ Nizwa - On arrival you will meet with Tony and transfer to Nizwa, one of Oman’s oldest cities and once a centre of trade and religion. Spend the afternoon at leisure.

Day 3  Nizwa - Explore Nizwa, including a visit to the magnificent Nizwa Fort. Afternoon walk through the terraced fields and picturesque villages of Jebel Akhdar.

Day 4  Nizwa (Christmas Day) - Depart for the mud brick town of Al Hamra whose old mansions are overlooked by date plantation and mountains. Later visit Jabrin Castle, famous for its elaborately painted ceilings and carved verses of the Koran. Afternoon visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site tombs of Al Ayn. Christmas picnic lunch overlooking the tombs.

Day 5  Nizwa/ Wahiba Sands – Depart for the Thursday market at Sinaw where Camels are sold and Bedouin lay out wares for sale. Continue deep into the beautiful dunes of the Wahiba Sands to spend a memorable night under star-filled skies at your Bedouin style desert camp.

Day 6  Wahiba Sands/ Ra’s al Hadd - Depart through the Jaalan region of Oman, with its scattered towns and onwards to Oman’s east coast. In the evening, the chance to experience nesting green turtles at Ra’s al Hadd.

Day 7  Ra's al Hadd/ Muscat - Travel to the town of Sur to visit the Dhow Yards where skilled craftsmen have made these iconic ships for centuries. Continue to the beautiful valley of Wadi Tiwi, visited by Ibn Battuta and finally arrive into Muscat.

Day 8  Muscat - Today visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a gift from the present ruler to his people, the Bait Al Zubair Cultural Museum and Beit Baranda. Also take a walk through the atmospheric souq.                        

Day 9  Muscat/ London - Lunchtime flight back to London

Tony Walsh

Tony Walsh has been resident in Oman and the Arabian Peninsula since 1986. He has travelled through all countries in the Peninsula and widely elsewhere in the Arab World. Tony has led tours and lectured in Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates since 1993 and has also lectured for University Alumni associations including Harvard and Stanford Universities.

Tony’s business background and long standing association with Oman which he now calls home enables him to provide in-depth insight into Oman as it has rapidly developed into a modern state since 1970. He is a keen photographer and has had a wide range of written articles published both internationally and locally on Oman.
